Vier Superstars ihres Genres werden an diesem Abend das Darmstädter Publikum mitreißen. Grisha Goryachev gilt als legitimer Nachfolger Paco de Lucias und hat genau wie Joscho Stephan (Gypsy Swing) viele Fans auf der ganzen Welt. Joscho ist sowohl solistisch als auch mit vielen Ensembles auf der ganzen Welt on tour. Und hinter dem Duo “Hands on Strings“ verbergen sich die beiden Weltklassegitarristen Stephan Bormann und Thomas Fellow. Sie fühlen sich in vielen Stilrichtungen zuhause, was sich am besten als Weltmusik beschreiben lässt.
Grisha Goryachev (*1977 in St. Petersburg)
ist einer der wenigen Gitarristen, die die Tradition der Flamenco-Gitarre als Solokonzertinstrument in der Nachfolge wie Ramon Montoya und Sabicas fortsetzen. Grisha debütierte mit 9 Jahren, spielte dann als "Wunderkind" in renommierten Konzertsälen in St. Petersburg, Moskau und Riga und trat regelmässig im sowjetischen Fernsehen auf. Später studierte er klassische Gitarre bei Eliot Fisk in Boston (Bachelor, Master, Doctor of MA). 1991 erhielt er in Den Haag den "Danny Kaye International Childrens Award", trat anschließend in der UN-Zentrale in New York und später auf königliche Einladung in Skandinavien auf. Nach einer Spanientournee spielte er für Paco de Lucia, der sich persönlich für sein Künstlervisum für die USA einsetzte. Neben den Werken von Flamencogrößen wie Paco de Lucia, Vicente Amigo und Rafael Riqueni integriert er auch klassisches Repertoire in seine Konzerte. 2006 wurde Grisha
zum Fellow beim Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship ernannt. Seine Youtube-Videos erreichen mittlerweile mehr als 10 Millionen Menschen. Neben seinem Konzertleben nutzt Grisha die freie Zeit zum Wandern, Radfahren und Rudern. Er liebt - natürlich - russische Literatur. “Eine meiner Lieblingsbeschäftigungen ist tatsächlich Autofahren“, sagt Grisha. “Früher habe ich oft stundenlang im Auto gesessen und bin ohne ein festes Ziel umhergefahren. Ich bin übrigens ein miserabler Koch, dafür ein umso passionierterer Schlemmer.“
Joscho Stephan (* 1979 in Mönchengladbach)
zählt zu den spannendsten K̈ünstlern der Akustik-Gitarren-Szene. Geprägt von seiner meisterhaften Gitarrenkunst, hat er einen einzigartigen Stil entwickelt, der den klassischen Swing à la Django Reinhardt mit einer modernen, kreativen Weiterentwicklung kombiniert. Er überzeugt nicht nur mit neu interpretierten Klassikern des Genres, sondern auch mit eigenen Kompositionen, die Elemente aus Latin, Klassik, Pop und Rock integrieren. Diese kreative Mischung begeistert ein breites Publikum und zeigt Joscho als musikalischen Visionär. Die Produktion *Paris – Berlin* wurde als Direct-to-Disc-Schallplattenaufnahme in den legendären Hansa Studios in Berlin aufgenommen. Darüber hinaus hat Joscho mehrere Live-Alben veröffentlicht, die die Energie seiner Konzertauftritte dokumentieren. Sein erfolgreicher YouTube-Kanal, der fast 40 Millionen Aufrufe verzeichnen kann, gipfelt im Best-of-Album *Playlist*, das ausschließlich Aufnahmen von diesem Kanal enthält. Joscho hat ausverkaufte Konzerte in Deutschland gespielt und trat auf renommierten Festivals wie den Leverkusener Jazztagen und dem Rheingau Musik Festival auf. International ist er regelmäßig in Italien, Polen und Spanien unterwegs und spielt ausgedehnte Tournee in USA und Australien umfasst. Im Laufe seiner Karriere hat Joscho Stephan mit Kü̈nstlern wie Bireli Lagrène, Stochelo Rosenberg, Tommy Emmanuel, Daniel Hope und Peter Kraus zusammengearbeitet. Joscho trat zudem gemeinsam mit Frank Vignola und John Jorgenson im legendären Birdland Jazzclub in New York auf, wo sie insgesamt acht Auftritte spielten – ein weiterer Höhepunkt in seiner internationalen Karriere. In seiner Freizeit widmet sich Joscho dem Angeln und dem Billardspielen. Als großer Tierfan besucht er regelmäßig jeden naheliegenden Zoo und übernahm sogar die Patenschaft für ein Alpaka (getauft auf den namen Django).
Duo Hands on Strings
Besser als mit Stephan Bormanns eigenen Worte lässt sich „Hands on Strings“ nicht beschreiben: „Unser erstes Zusammenspiel war ein sehr spontanes während eines Workshops 1999 in Dresden. Thomas referierte vor den Kursteilnehmern über verschiedene Begleittechniken und wollte etwas demonstrieren und so bat er mich, mit ihm zusammen zu spielen. Was dann passierte, hatte dieses Projekt zur Folge. Unsere Eigenart begründet sich darin, dass wir zwei unterschiedliche Backgrounds haben: Thomas spielt nur mit Fingern und ich mit dem Plektrum oder kombiniert. Daraus ergeben sich unendlich viele stilistische Möglichkeiten. Zusätzlich rundet Thomas auf seine intelligente humorvolle Art unsere Konzerte mit seinen Ansagen ab und macht sie für den Hörer zu einem »Gesamtkunstwerk«. Wir haben den Spaß an dem Projekt auch nach über 10 Jahren noch nicht verloren und hoffen, dass es noch lange so weiter geht!“ Publikum und Kritik überbieten sich mit Lob und Begeisterung für die einmalige Kombination dieser beiden Ausnahmemusiker, die mit der Intensität einer Band und den Klangfarben eines Orchesters spielen und dabei mühelos die Fesseln eines Gitarrenduos sprengen.
Thomas Fellow (* 1966 in Leipzig) bereiste nach seinem klassischen Studium an der Musikhochschule in Weimar die Welt von Indien über die USA bis nach Brasilien. Er beendete seine „klassische“ Laufbahn im Jahre 1992 mit einem Konzert in der Berliner Philharmonie um fortan, wie er selbst sagt, „der Musik meines Herzens zu folgen“. Sein Duo Friend ‘n Fellow mit der Sängerin Constanze Friend gilt nach weit über 1000 Konzerten und vielen verkauften CDs inzwischen als das erfolgreichste Projekt dieser Art in Europa. Thomas ist Professor für „Akustische Gitarre“ an der Musikhochschule Dresden, Initiator des European Guitar Award und Autor einer wegweisenden Schule für die Gitarre als Begleitinstrument (Schott Music). Zusammen mit Reentko Dirks, Zoran Dukic und Pavel Steidl bildet er das sehr erfolgreiche European Guitar Quartet.
Stephan Bormann (* 1966 in Magdeburg) ist ein überaus vielseitiger Gitarrist, der schon während seines Jazz-Pop-Musikstudiums an der Musikhochschule in Dresden „begann, eigene Band-Ideen umzusetzen und in diversen Jazz-Projekten mitzuspielen. Neben den üblichen Jazz-Gitarren Heros waren für mich Bläser wie Chet Baker, Stan Getz oder Michael Brecker eine wichtige Inspiration und Motivation zur Transkription.“ S. Bormann ist heute nicht nur erfolgreicher Musiker (u. a. mit seiner Band Open Range und Volker Schlott oder im Konzert mit Jazzstars wie Nils Landgren) sondern auch Komponist mit Veröffentlichungen im AMA - Verlag. Als Gitarrist von Cristin Claas ist er Sony Classical Recording Artist. Stephan ist Professor für Gitarre Jazz/Rock/Pop an der Musikhochschule in Dresden.
Guitar Heroes - The artists
Four superstars of their genre will thrill the Darmstadt audience on this evening. Grisha Goryachev is regarded as the legitimate successor to Paco de Lucia and, like Joscho Stephan (Gypsy Swing), has many fans all over the world. Joscho is on tour both as a soloist and with many ensembles around the world. And behind the duo ‘Hands on Strings’ are the two world-class guitarists Stephan Bormann and Thomas Fellow. They feel at home in many styles, which can best be described as world music.
Grisha Goryachev (*1977 in St. Petersburg)
is one of the few guitarists to continue the tradition of the flamenco guitar as a solo concert instrument, following in the footsteps of Ramon Montoya and Sabicas.Grisha made his debut at the age of 9, then played as a ‘child prodigy’ in renowned concert halls in St. Petersburg, Moscow and Riga and appeared regularly on Soviet television.He later studied classical guitar with Eliot Fisk in Boston (Bachelor, Master, Doctor of MA).In 1991 he received the ‘Danny Kaye International Childrens Award’ in The Hague, then performed at the UN headquarters in New York and later in Scandinavia by royal invitation.After a tour of Spain, he played for Paco de Lucia, who personally campaigned for his artist visa for the USA. In addition to the works of flamenco greats such as Paco de Lucia, Vicente Amigo and Rafael Riqueni, he also integrates classical repertoire into his concerts. In 2006, Grisha was appointed a fellow of the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship. His YouTube videos now reach more than 10 million people. In addition to his concert life, Grisha uses his free time for hiking, cycling and rowing. He loves - of course - Russian literature. ‘One of my favourite pastimes is actually driving,’ says Grisha. ‘I used to sit in the car for hours and drive around without a fixed destination. I'm a lousy cook, by the way, but I'm all the more passionate about food.’
Joscho Stephan (* 1979 in Mönchengladbach)
is one of the most exciting artists on the acoustic guitar scene. Characterised by his masterful guitar skills, he has developed a unique style that combines classic swing à la Django Reinhardt with a modern, creative twist.He not only impresses with reinterpreted classics of the genre, but also with his own compositions that integrate elements of Latin, classical, pop and rock.This creative mixture inspires a wide audience and shows Joscho as a musical visionary.The production *Paris - Berlin* was recorded direct-to-disc at the legendary Hansa Studios in Berlin. Joscho has also released several live albums documenting the energy of his concert performances. His successful YouTube channel, which has almost 40 million views, culminates in the best-of album *Playlist*, which contains only recordings from this channel. Joscho has played sold-out concerts in Germany and performed at renowned festivals such as the Leverkusener Jazztage and the Rheingau Music Festival. Internationally, he regularly travels to Italy, Poland and Spain and has toured extensively in the USA and Australia. Over the course of his career, Joscho Stephan has worked with artists such as Bireli Lagrène, Stochelo Rosenberg, Tommy Emmanuel, Daniel Hope and Peter Kraus. Duo Hands on Strings
There is no better way to describe ‘Hands on Strings’ than in Stephan Bormann's own words: ‘Our first interaction was a very spontaneous one during a workshop in Dresden in 1999. Thomas was lecturing to the course participants on various accompaniment techniques and wanted to demonstrate something, so he asked me to play along with him. What happened next resulted in this project. Our peculiarity lies in the fact that we have two different backgrounds: Thomas only plays with his fingers and I play with a plectrum or a combination. This results in an infinite number of stylistic possibilities. In addition, Thomas rounds off our concerts with his intelligent, humorous announcements and turns them into a ‘total work of art’ for the listener. Even after more than 10 years, we haven't lost the fun of the project and hope that it will continue for a long time to come!’ Audiences and critics alike are full of praise and enthusiasm for the unique combination of these two exceptional musicians, who play with the intensity of a band and the tonal colours of an orchestra, effortlessly breaking the shackles of a guitar duo.
Thomas Fellow (* 1966 in Leipzig) travelled the world from India to the USA and Brazil after completing his classical studies at the University of Music in Weimar. He ended his ‘classical’ career in 1992 with a concert in the Berlin Philharmonie in order to, as he says himself, ‘follow the music of my heart’. His duo Friend ‘n Fellow with singer Constanze Friend is now regarded as the most successful project of its kind in Europe, having given well over 1000 concerts and sold many CDs. Thomas is professor for ‘Acoustic Guitar’ at the Dresden University of Music, initiator of the European Guitar Award and author of a groundbreaking school for the guitar as an accompanying instrument (Schott Music). Together with Reentko Dirks, Zoran Dukic and Pavel Steidl, he forms the highly successful European Guitar Quartet.
Stephan Bormann (* 1966 in Magdeburg) is an extremely versatile guitarist who ‘began realising his own band ideas and playing in various jazz projects during his jazz-pop music studies at the Musikhochschule in Dresden. In addition to the usual jazz guitar heroes, horn players such as Chet Baker, Stan Getz and Michael Brecker were an important inspiration and motivation for me to transcribe.’ Today, S. Bormann is not only a successful musician (including with his band Open Range and Volker Schlott or in concert with jazz stars such as Nils Landgren) but also a composer with publications in the AMA publishing house. As Cristin Claas' guitarist, he is a Sony Classical Recording Artist. Stephan is Professor of Guitar Jazz/Rock/Pop at the University of Music in Dresden.
